Kaitlyn Sendzik Runs at State Championship Meet

Kaitlyn Sendzik, senior captain of the Mt. Assisi Academy Cross Country team, qualified for the state Cross Country meet following her 2nd place finish at Regionals and her 5th place finish at Sectionals. Sendzik’s time at Sectionals for 3.1 miles was 20 minutes & 7 seconds.

This year Kaitlyn also won the Tinley Park Invitational and is a second year Girls Catholic Athletic Conference (GCAC) All-Conference Athlete.

On Saturday, November 5th at Detweiler Park in Peoria, Sendzik came in 69th out of the 206 runners at the IHSA State Cross Country Championship Meet with a 3 mile time of 19.11. She also became the 5th runner in school history to run in the State Championship.

Mount Assisi Academy is celebrating its 60th anniversary. MAA Senior Swims at Nationals

Mount Assisi Academy Senior, Sophia Galounis of Joliet participated in the YMCA National Swimming Championships in Atlanta Georgia. Sophia swims with the Joliet Y Jets Swim Team. While at the National Competition, Galounis reduced her swim time in three of her four events. Swimming is a year round sport for Sophia; during the past three school – years she has represented Mount Assisi Academy (Lemont) at the IHSA Sectional Swim Meet.

MAA Student is Finalist for PCA Scholarship

Mount Assisi Academy student Olivia Palutsis (of Lemont) has been named a finalist in the Positive Coaching Alliance’s (PCA’s) Triple-Impact Competitor Scholarship Program. Of the thirty Chicago-Area student-athletes named as finalists, PCA will award $1000 college scholarship to six high school seniors who best exemplify PCA’s model of the Triple-Impact Competitor:

• Personal Mastery – Making oneself better
• Leadership — Making one’s teammates better
• Honoring the Game — Making the game better

Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) is a nonprofit organization founded at Stanford University with the mission to transform the culture of youth sports to give all young athletes the opportunity for a positive, character-building experience.

Olivia is a senior and involved in many clubs and activities at Mount Assisi. During September 2010, Olivia was named Triblocal Athlete of the Month for her skill and sportsmanship on the tennis courts. Olivia also brought her athleticism to the soccer field as a member of the varsity squad. Mount Assisi Academy is proud of Olivia’s hard work and dedication on and off the playing field.

Ver Schave Recognized as Athletic Director of the Year

June VerSchave, resident of Bolingbrook, will receive the Athletic Director of the Year 1A/2A Division 3 in Bloomington on April 30 from the Illinois Athletic Directors Association. Ms. VerSchave, with Mt. Assisi Academy since August of 1994, became Co-Athletic Director in 2002 and Athletic Director in 2006.

At Mount Assisi, she coached varsity volleyball for eight years and, with her eldest daughter Beth, coached varsity soccer for its first year in 1998. In addition to coaching, VerSchave taught physical education and health.

With great pride, VerSchave recalls that her 1996 and 1999 volleyball teams were Regional Champions. The ’96 team went on to Sectional Finals. At present, VerSchave oversees Mount Assisi’s volleyball, basketball, track, cross country, soccer, softball, tennis, golf, and dance teams. She is also Vice-President of the Girls Catholic Athletic Conference (GCAC) which also includes being Hall of Fame Director.

VerSchave’s outstanding memories of her years as Athletic Director include working with the Mount Assisi Girls and sharing their joys. She advises high school athletes “to work hard, give it their all, and then be proud of their best. Enjoy your sport and your teammates.”

Cheryl Broadhurst, President of Mount Assisi’ s Booster Club, is elated at this outstanding recognition for June. Broadhurst, who has had four daughters who participated in sports at Mount Assisi, described VerSchave as “enthusiastic, dedicated, and on top of every sport even to driving the school bus to events.”

MAA JV Poms Place 6th at State

Mt. Assisi’s first Junior Varsity Dance Pom Team placed 6th in State in Bloomington on March 5, 2011 with a score of 76 points. State Qualifying Scores were earned at previous competitions at Tuscola, Niles North, and Downers Grove North.

Team members include Brianna Cavallone, Head Captain; Alyssa Sajdak and Jaime Vayalil, Co-Captains; Jessica Falco, Alex Parise, Apple Pilamunga, Sam Ryczek, Rachel Sepulveda, and Jeslyn Vayalil.

Junior Varsity Poms practice five days a week for two hours in addition to some weekends. Captain Alyssa Sajdak describes the practices as “rigorous for the very hard working team.” Team members are also required to participate in the summer camp in June and July.

Ms. Breslin, Coach, added that among the team’s distinctions were being chosen to perform a hip-hop dance at Chicago Dance Slam in October at the University of Chicago and also at the IAHPERD State Convention in November.
