It All “Adds Up” to Success at MAA

The Mount Assisi Math Team placed 1st in the oral competition. The students demonstrated mastery in the topics of Planning, Scheduling and Linear Programming during their first math competition of the academic year. Congratulations to Rebecca Wood and Mary Kate Feldner for bringing this exciting victory to the “school on the hill”.

The Junior-Senior Relay Team comprised of Sharon Desparrois, Jaimie Vayalil and Jeslyn Vayalil secured 4th place in their Catholic Math League South. High Scorers included: Lily Olguin: Algebra I, Lauryn White: Geometry, Gabriele Razma: Algebra II and Clare Kelly: PreCalculus.

Mount Assisi Academy President, Kimberly Johnson Quinn stated, “Our academy instituted a mini block schedule for science and algebra to best prepare our girls for college. We are very proud of our students’ success and grateful for all the work of our faculty, especially Ms. Linda Frieh for her dedication to the Math Team.”

Mount Assisi Academy is sponsored by the School Sisters of St. Francis of Christ the King. The Academy educates young women in the Franciscan tradition, challenging them to their fullest potential within a 21st century framework of collaboration, global awareness, digital literacy and creative problem solving.

MAA Names New Leadership

Mount Assisi Academy, who is celebrating its 60th anniversary of preparing young women for college, announced the appointment of their new President, Kimberly Johnson Quinn. This announcement was made by the Provincial Superior and the Board President, as the school celebrated their Franciscan heritage and patron, St. Francis of Assisi.

This Chicago native brings nearly 20 years of Catholic educational leadership experience in the higher education and secondary education sectors. In addition to this rich background in Catholic education, she possesses a spirit of faith, and readiness to lead. Kimberly Johnson Quinn possesses a Bachelors degree in marketing from Lewis University and an M.B.A. from Saint Xavier University.

Mount Assisi Academy educates young women in the Franciscan tradition, challenging them to their fullest potential within a 21st century framework of collaboration, global awareness, digital literacy and creative problem solving.

MAA Senior Swims at Nationals

Mount Assisi Academy Senior, Sophia Galounis of Joliet participated in the YMCA National Swimming Championships in Atlanta Georgia. Sophia swims with the Joliet Y Jets Swim Team. While at the National Competition, Galounis reduced her swim time in three of her four events. Swimming is a year round sport for Sophia; during the past three school – years she has represented Mount Assisi Academy (Lemont) at the IHSA Sectional Swim Meet.

MAA Sophomore is a Leader in the Making

Current MAA sophomore Alexis Topel (Darien) participated in the National Young Leaders Conference (NYLC) this past summer in Washington D.C.  NYLC is a week-long program for high –achieving high school sophomores, juniors and seniors; which is designed to educate, inspire and motivate students.  While in Washington D.C., Alexis and other participants met with Presidential Cabinet secretaries, members of Congress, lobbyists, journalists and academics.  This hands-on governmental experience gave all a greater understanding of their roles in democracy and the responsibilities of leadership. 

Topel’s thoughts of the conference, “the NYLC program was one of the best experiences of my life; the curriculum helped me improve on leadership and to me, leadership is the number one skill needed in life to make a change in the world.”  Alexis has already demonstrated leadership skills at Mount Assisi Academy (Lemont) through her participation on the Dance Team, Christian Life Community, Student Ambassadors, Echo Newspaper and the Assisian Yearbook.  Ms. Linda Frieh, MAA faculty member, nominated Alexis for the conference.  Frieh saw Topel’s “go getter” attitude while a student in her Freshman Honors Algebra class.  All faculty and staff are proud of Alexis’ efforts at the National Youth Leadership Conference.

MAA Student is Finalist for PCA Scholarship

Mount Assisi Academy student Olivia Palutsis (of Lemont) has been named a finalist in the Positive Coaching Alliance’s (PCA’s) Triple-Impact Competitor Scholarship Program. Of the thirty Chicago-Area student-athletes named as finalists, PCA will award $1000 college scholarship to six high school seniors who best exemplify PCA’s model of the Triple-Impact Competitor:

• Personal Mastery – Making oneself better
• Leadership — Making one’s teammates better
• Honoring the Game — Making the game better

Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) is a nonprofit organization founded at Stanford University with the mission to transform the culture of youth sports to give all young athletes the opportunity for a positive, character-building experience.

Olivia is a senior and involved in many clubs and activities at Mount Assisi. During September 2010, Olivia was named Triblocal Athlete of the Month for her skill and sportsmanship on the tennis courts. Olivia also brought her athleticism to the soccer field as a member of the varsity squad. Mount Assisi Academy is proud of Olivia’s hard work and dedication on and off the playing field.
