Mount Assisi Academy Participates in State of Illinois Sustainable Schools Compact

APRIL 20, 2010- – - Mount Assisi Academy is partnering with the State of Illinois to promote sustainability through environmentally sound practices including energy conservation, recycling, reduction of fuel consumption and pollution, and sustainable grounds maintenance by minimizing the use of chemical fertilizers and following a conservative watering schedule.

According to Mount Assisi Academy Principal Sister Mary Francis Werner, SSFCR, the school is one of 375 educational institutions across the state working to incorporate energy-efficient practices into daily operations at their schools, as well integrate curriculum-based environmental topics into everyday learning at MAA. “Mount Assisi Academy is blessed to be located in a naturally beautiful area of Lemont, on rolling hills adjacent to Cog Hill Golf Club. It is a wide span of land populated by a variety of natural flora and fauna, as well as many
species of birds and animals,” Sister noted. “We would like to keep it green and growing – and are doing so in accordance with the Illinois Sustainable Schools Compact,” Sister continued.

Mount Assisi Academy is taking steps to improve energy efficiency of its physical plant and also conserve water resources. The integration of environmental studies and green career development programs into the school’s curriculum is also in the works. Father Daughter Dance – Saturday, January 23, 2010

The school’s annual Father-Daughter Dance was held Saturday, January 23, 2010. Over 100 MAA students and their dads enjoyed “La Bella Notte – A Beautiful Evening,” complete with dancing and refreshments. The Italian-themed dance provided MAA dads and their daughters with an opportunity to meet and mingle – and dance the night away in the school’s gymnasium which was transformed into a Venetian Italian village.

Mount Assisi Academy sophomore Alexandra Parisi (Orland Park) and dad John enjoy some time off the dance floor.

Special recognition and thanks go to Ann Rogers, coordinator for this outstanding event!

Earned Income Credit Outreach Campaign

The 2010 campaign to inform low-income working people that they could qualify for tax refunds through the Earned Income Credit (EIC) and the Child Tax Credit has begun. Working families need to know that help may be available when they file their tax returns in 2010. This year eligible families and individuals can receive as much as $5,657, and they may qualify for credits even if they did not earn enough in 2009 to own income tax. Effective outreach is needed to prevent low and moderate income working families from missing out on opportunities they simply cannot afford to pass up. The 2010 outreach campaign kit is available online at http://eitcoutreach.org/.
Mt. Assisi Academy Parents

MAA’s Sisters celebrated their 100th Anniversary October 18 at Drury Lane Oak Brook

The last event celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the School Sisters of St. Francis of Christ the King ministry in the US started on October 25, 2009 with Mass said by Cardinal George in the Convent Chapel. The day proceeded with a dinner at the Drury Lane in Oakbrook, IL with over 300 in
attendance. The Sisters’ Rev. Mother from Rome and Provincial Superiors from their
provinces in Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, and Italy, joined us for this special event. MAA declared October 20 “Franciscan Day” to honor the visiting Sisters, and hosted them at MAA for a prayer service, information
sessions and a tour. Our students received a wonderful insight into the expansive ministry carried out by our Sisters all over the world.
