Clubs & Activities

Ambassador Club
Sophomores, juniors and seniors have an opportunity to develop leadership and marketing skills by assisting the MAA recruitment director with elementary school visits, high school nights, Shadow Days and Open House events.

Assisian
The Assisian is the MAA yearbook. Students who work on the Assisian receive one-quarter credit in photojournalism. It requires ongoing dedication and learning.

Christian Life Club
The main objective of this group is for its members to develop a closer relationship to God through regular prayer life and greater love of neighbor. By creating more active faith awareness through the example set by its members in prayer activities, love and concern for each other and service to the poor, CLC aids in enhancing the existing Christian atmosphere in the community of MAA.

Drama Club

Echo
News at Mt. Assisi Academy is published six times each school year in the award-winning school newspaper, The Echo. Anyone interested in newspaper reporting, photography, or graphics is invited to join the staff, but need to register for Journalism. Planning, deadline, and layout meetings take place after school on Wednesdays.

Student reporters and assistant or junior editors for Echo also receive one-quarter credit by fulfilling their obligation to contribute to all six (6) issues of the newspaper. Seniors who serve as editors receive one-half credit for writing, layout, and design of the publication.

French Club
The Mount Assisi Academy French Club invites students studying the French language, as well as any student interested in France, to participate in French games (i.e. the French version of Clue), field trip excursions, and screen French movies (no subtitles!) Club meetings are held on the fourth Thursday of the month after school.

Invision
Invision, the student literary magazine, includes student’s original prose, poetry and artwork, and is published once a year. It is a not-for-credit publication and staff membership is open to all students.

Kairos

Liturgical Choir
Liturgical Choir is a course which acquaints students with music appropriate for Eucharistic celebrations and prayer services. Students gain experience in two and three part music and in cantoring.
This course meets a half period each school day to prepare for the ten all school celebrations during the year. Students may also participate in the after school session which meets on Tuesdays. Students earn one-half credit per year.

Math Team
The MAA Math Team is open to all students who enjoy math and are interested in expanding their base of knowledge in this discipline. This team participates in the Catholic Math League South throughout the school year, as well as the State Math Contest – sponsored by the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics – in the spring. Practice is scheduled once or twice a week during the “Math” season, and competitions are held Saturday mornings in October, December, February and March.

NHS
Membership in the National Honor Society at Mount Assisi Academy is open to all students who meet membership criteria including academic standing, character and leadership qualities, and 40 hours of moderator-approved service requirements. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have earned a minimum grade point average of 3.50 and accrue no more than 10 demerits (one detention) per year are eligible for National Honor Society membership.

Reader’s Cafe
The purpose of this club is to encourage students to read and to share their reading experiences with other students. Reader’s Café meets once a month on a Tuesday in the MAA Library from 2:20-3:30 p.m. Each meeting will have a theme. Students are encouraged to come even if they have not read a book for that month.

Science Club
Members of the Mount Assisi Academy Science Club are actively involved in community –based scientific and ecological projects, including re-cycling and MAA’s Bluebird Conservation Project.

Science Club activities are designed to encourage scientific exploration through various activities.

Secret Knitting and Crocheting Society
The Secret Knitting and Crocheting Society is open to all students – whether they are experienced or not! Students come together on a bi-monthly basis to knit, crochet and enjoy each other’s company and conversation.

Spanish Club
The goal of “EL Club Espanol” (Spanish Club) is to promote communication using the Spanish language and to gain a more in-depth understanding of the cultures of the Spanish-speaking nations around the world.

MAA’s Spanish Club celebrates Hispanic culture, food and language through the observance of holidays; inviting guest speakers to classes; excursions to restaurants featuring typical Spanish dishes; and playing games using the language itself.

Student Council
The MAA Student Council members provide exemplary service to the school and are promoters of various school activities that benefit the community of MAA. All Student Council members dedicate themselves to encouraging genuine service and school spirit in the student body at-large.
